The "Magic" of DDP

Digital Development Processing is new in version 2 of MaxIm DL. It is a very powerful (yet easy to use!) tool for taming those too-bright cores of globular clusters and galaxies.

DDP lets you turn a crappy-looking globular cluster like this... Before DDP ...into this, with just a couple of mouse-clicks! After DDP
Choose your software:

DDP Dialog
MaxIm DL

To use DDP, simply choose the "Digital Development..." option from the "Process" menu in MaxIm DL ("Filters" menu in v3).

Click on the "Filter Type" you think is best (use the Preview Image to experiment!), then click the "OK" button.

That's all there is to it!

If you choose "FFT - Low Pass" as the Filter Type, then you need also to experiment with the Mild, Medium, and Hard settings to see which is best. If you are really adventurous, there is also a custom setting, although I've never needed to use that one.

AstroArt

To use DDP, simply choose the "DDP" option from the "Filters" menu in AstroArt.

Move the top (threshold) slider to set the background level and the bottom (high pass) slider to adjust the sharpness of the image. Press the "Preview" button after each adjustment to see the result. Don't forget that you can also adjust the histogram while doing this.

That's all there is to it!
