Although it was sunny until early afternoon, skies soon clouded over and it became quite gray. The weather forecast didn't sound very promising either. Then, around sunset, the forecast on the radio called for clear skies overnight! I raced outside and set up as the skies cleared. Just as I was ready to start imaging, the sky became overcast again!
After a half hour or so, it was clear again so I imaged NGC 7023 for an hour before clouds again took over the sky. Once again I passed the time doing dark frames and then waiting. I imaged NGC 7538 and it stayed clear, so I moved on to M76 and finished off with NGC 1501.
There were some windy periods and I had to set up a temporary windscreen for the scope. Dew was light and the temperature ranged from +15C to a chilly +8C -- the coldest night yet! The transparency tonight was excellent, though the seeing wasn't very good. A big problem tonight was the return of a very bright searchlight emanating from just east of south. It reached all the way to the northern tip of Cepheus! Fortunately, when I stepped out of the garage for a quick cloud check, I saw the searchlight switch off at 01:12! I would be able to go south to image M76 after all!
