November 2004

Overview

It was a good November once again this year, with 10 nights of imaging (though clouds and moon interfered with a few). Automation-wise I still need to implement a system to have ACP wake me up when a script fails.

The grade 6 class from Winchester Public School came for a tour of the observatory on Wednesday afternoon (Nov 24th).

I started contributing computing time to the World Community Grid this month (proteome folding project).

The SXV-H9 is the imaging camera, with exposures for variable stars of 120 seconds at 4x4 binning (unguided). This month's session notes are below the overview section.

Session Notes

Wed/Thu November 3/4, 2004

One hour was lost pre-dawn because the moon was near EG Cnc and the moonglow saturated the CCD, crashing the ACP script.

Sun/Mon November 7/8, 2004

There was a very nice all sky coronal aurora display tonight. See Nov 7/8 notes for pictures.

Tue/Wed November 9/10, 2004

I observed the moon and Jupiter close together on the computer screen in the control room (after doing a daytime blind start on the scope). Mom and dad joined me but unfortunately cumulus clouds blocked the view just minutes before the occultation and we were unable to see it.

Fri/Sat November 12/13, 2004

There must have been some clouds which caused the ACP script I was running to crash at 02:45:46. At 04:39:08 the computer locked up and the dome closed automatically 10 minutes later. This is the first time the computer has done this, so I am going to return to my habit of turning it off and then booting it at the beginning of each session.

Fri/Sat November 28/29, 2004

Most of the night turned out to be cloudy, but I managed to image half a dozen variables anyway.
