November 2005

Overview

Lots of cloud this month, so I was only able to image on 6 nights of which only three were clear from most or all of the night. Some moisture got into the circuitry of the camera, but I was able to dry it out and the camera was OK again. It is a good idea to wrap a heater element around the camera and run it for a couple hours a day during extended damp, cloudy periods. (I do this with the LX-200 base too, to try to keep it healthy as well.)
The AAVSO launched a Friend Mapper page on their website which shows the location of its various members (at least those who chose to add themselves).
The AAVSO has released another (and particularly good) edition of Eyepiece Views.
The SXV-H9 is the imaging camera, with exposures for variable stars of 120 seconds at 4x4 binning (unguided). This month's session notes are below the overview section.

Session Notes

Fri/Sat November 18/19, 2005

The SXV-H9 was giving funny images tonight. I checked the chip for condensation but there was none. The "clumpy" histogram was a clue that something unusual was going on. (See images below.) I had to bring the camera in to the house and warm it up to drive moisture out of the circuitry.

Sat/Sun November 19/20, 2005

The full moon was blasting away tonight, lighting up the cirrus cloud, but it was clear enough to test the camera. The SXV-H9 is back to normal!
