The RASC Toronto Centre

Holleford Meteor Crater Expedition

July 16-17, 1983

View from inside the Holleford meteor crater
This is the view from inside the crater, looking southwest. The centre of the crater is to the right; the slight rise on the left in the distance is what remains of the crater wall. The crater is about 2½ km in diameter and the walls rise to an average height of 15m above the floor.

Seven members of the RASC Toronto Centre toured the Holleford crater, located just north of Kingston:

Several members of the RASC Kingston Centre came out to meet us:

After the crater tour, the expedition members headed to the Old MacDonald Farm north of Belleville. Saturday night was clear and the moon was just at first quarter, ensuring plenty of dark hours between moonset and morning twilight. Four telescopes (all 8" SCTs) were set up well before sunset in anticipation of some good observing.

Aurora Borealis

The transparency was very good and the dark skies were enjoyed by all. Around midnight, Steve Spinney was aroused from his nap by the loud shouts of some very excited aurora spectators! The other highlights of the night were the Milky Way, the Andomeda Galaxy, and the winter constellations of Auriga and Taurus. Many of us slept outside under the stars.
